Swanson Health Products Recalls Swanson Organic Celery Seed

Swanson Health Products is voluntarily recalling Swanson Organic Celery Seed (Whole) which is packaged in plastic bottles with a net weight of 1.4 oz. (40 grams) because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism entering the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The product was sold by several different methods.  It was either sold at the Swanson Health Products retail store, 109 Broadway N., Fargo, ND, shipped directly to on-line or mail-order consumers, or held for pick up by the consumer at Swanson Health Products headquarters.  The product was sold between June 16, 2011, and December 16, 2011.

The lot number of Swanson Health Products Brand Celery Seed (Whole) with code UPC 0-8761424048-0 included in this recall is BESTBY03JUN2013 1541102C.  The lot number and Best By date can be found on the bottom of the bottle.

Consumers in possession of this voluntarily recalled product may return it to Swanson Health Products headquarters in Fargo, North Dakota, for a full refund. B&M, Inc. Conducts A Voluntary Recall Of O Organics Organic Celery Seed Sold At Safeway Nationwide Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination

B&M, Inc. of Mount Vernon, Missouri is voluntarily recalling O Organics Organic Celery Seed sold in Safeway stores due to potential Salmonella contamination. The product is sold at all Safeway-owned stores, including Safeway, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.

Nebraska Firm Recalls Ground Beef Products Due To Possible E. Coli O157:H7 Contamination

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., a Dakota City, Neb. establishment, is recalling approximately 40,948 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. 

The following products are subject to recall:

• 10-pound chubs of "CHUCK FINE GROUND BEEF 80/20," packed in cases containing eight chubs.

The products subject to recall have a "BEST BEFORE OR FREEZE BY" date of "11/13/11" and "EST. 245C" on the box label. The products were shipped to institutions and distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

E. coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160° F. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.

Northeastern Grocery Chain Recalls Ground Beef Products Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination

Hannaford, a Scarborough, Maine-based grocery chain, is recalling an undetermined amount of fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella Typhimurium, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall are any size package of the following:

• "73% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef"
• "75% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef"
• "80% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef"
• "85% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef"
• "90% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef"
• "80% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef"
• "85% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef"
• "90% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef"
• "85% Nature's Place Ground Beef"
• "90% Nature's Place Ground Beef"

This recall was initiated due to concerns about illnesses caused by an outbreak of salmonellosis that may be associated with use and consumption of fresh in-store ground beef prepared in and purchased at Hannaford stores. The PFGE pattern associated with this outbreak is reported rarely in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported 14 ill persons with an indistinguishable PFGE pattern, and 11 of those individuals reported consuming ground beef. Seven individuals were hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. Ten of the 14 case-patients reported purchasing ground beef at Hannaford stores in Maine, New York, New Hampshire and Vermont between Oct. 12 and Nov. 20. No other product description is available at this time. As a result of on-going epidemiologic and traceback investigations, as well as in-store reviews, FSIS, working with the CDC and its state health partners, determined that there is a link between the Hannaford ground beef products and this illness outbreak.

The various ground beef packages bear sell-by dates of Dec. 17, 2011 or earlier and were sold at Hannaford stores throughout Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers.

The outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium has initially tested resistant to multiple commonly prescribed antibiotics, including drug classes such as beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and cephalosporins. Additional information on drug resistance will be made public as it becomes available.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or those undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

North Carolina Firm Recalls Meatloaf Entrées Due to Misbranding and an Undeclared Allergen

B. Roberts Foods, a Charlotte, N.C. establishment, is recalling approximately 130 pounds of individual serving meatloaf entrées because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains anchovies, a known allergen, which is not noted on the label.

The products subject to recall include: [View Label]

• 17-oz. refrigerated packages of "Harris Teeter, Fresh Foods Market, American Cuisine, Meatloaf with Red Skin Mashed Potatoes."       

The label on the top of each package correctly identifies the recalled products, but the bottom label of each package reads "Homestyle Meatloaf with Tomato Sauce." The bottom label bears the establishment number "EST. 19198" inside the USDA mark of inspection, as well as a use by date of "12/20/11." The product code "23431" also is stamped on the bottom label. The entrées were distributed to grocery stores in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Velvet Crème Popcorn Co. Issues Allergy Alert On Undeclared Milk, Soy, And Wheat In Products

Velvet Creme Popcorn Co. of Westwood, Kansas, is issuing this statement to alert people with allergies to Milk, Soy and Wheat that several of our products contain the undeclared ingredients. These people run a risk of serious or potential life threatening allergic reaction if they consume the following products:  

• Velvet Crème Peanut Brittle,  4 oz. cellophane bags (contains milk)
• Velvet Crème Tail Gate Crunch,  1 lb. and 8 oz. cellophane bags (contains soy and wheat)
• Velvet Crème Sweet Cajun Heat, 1 lb. and 8 oz. cellophane bags (contains soy and wheat)

These products do not have any lot codes.   Affected products would have been purchased before December 13, 2011, in our retail store in Westwood, Kansas.  

The recall was initiated after it was discovered the products had undeclared ingredients of milk, soy and wheat.  Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging process and has now been corrected.

Rising Moon Organics Announces a Voluntary Recall of One Code Date of Mislabeled Mediterranean Garlic & Herb Ravioli Due to Undeclared Soy Allergen

Rising Moon Organics® today issued a voluntary recall of Rising Moon Organics Mediterranean Garlic & Herb Ravioli, a frozen product, because of an incorrect back label on some packages.  This mislabeling incident resulted in an undeclared allergen (Soy).  People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The front of the retail package is correctly labeled Mediterranean Garlic & Herb Ravioli, 8 oz.  However, the back of the retail package is incorrectly labeled Four Cheese Tortelloni, UPC# 7-85030-55559-0. One Code Date is affected:  SELL BY APR 05 2012 printed on the front label (ONLY this Sell By date is being recalled).

The product involved was distributed through retail stores nationwide (eastern & central regions).

The recall was initiated when it was discovered that some packages were mislabeled by the co-packer.  Although soy ingredient is included in the product, the incorrect back label does not list soy in the ingredients statement.

Winn-Dixie Issues Voluntary Recall on Bulk Gummy Bears

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: WINN), is voluntarily recalling Sunrise Assorted Flavor Gummy Bears sold in the self-serve bulk area of select store produce departments between November 14 and December 13 due to a remote possibility of metal contamination.

The gummy bears included in this recall have been sold in five Winn-Dixie stores in Florida and Louisiana: 

• St. Johns Commons – 2220 County Road 210 W, Jacksonville, FL 32259
• Concord Shopping Mall – 11241 S.W. 40th Street, Miami, FL 33165
• Pepper Tree Plaza – 5600 West Sample Road, Margate, FL 33073

Advanced Animal Nutrition Recalls Dog Power Dry Dog Food

Advanced Animal Nutrition today announced a voluntary recall of its dry Dog Power Dog Food- due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit. The affected products were manufactured between Jan. 4, 2011, and Nov. 18, 2011.  Affected products are:

• DOG POWER ADULT MAINTENANCE FORMULA 21-12 Dog Food, 50 pound bags
• DOG POWER HUNTERS FORMULA 27-14 Dog Food, 50 pound bags
• DOG POWER HI-PRO PERFORMANCE FORMULA 26-18 Dog Food, 50 pound bags

The recall only applies to the above products with the following Packaging Date Codes (lot numbers):  K0004 through K1322.

The affected dry dog food products were distributed in the following states – Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana.  Retailers have already been instructed to remove the affected brands and products from store shelves.

While no adverse health effects related to these products have been reported, Advanced Animal Nutrition is implementing this recall as a precautionary measure.  Consumers are urged to return affected products – whether in opened or unopened packages – to their place of purchase for a full refund.  For more information, contact 866-648-7646.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold by-product.  Pets that have consumed any of the above recalled products and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

California Firm Recalls Chorizo Sausages Due to Misbranding and an Undeclared Allergen

Silva Sausage Co., a Gilroy, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 2,290 pounds of a chorizo sausage product because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains wheat, a known allergen, which is not noted on the label.

The products subject to recall include:

• 5-lb. vacuum packs of “NETO’S MEXICAN CHORIZO 4/1.”

The product subject to recall bears the establishment number “6086” inside the USDA mark of inspection and can be further identified by the item number “18062” and lot codes “11279,” “11293,” “11304,” “11321,” “11333,” or “11341.” The product was produced between Oct. 1, 2011, and Dec. 9, 2011, and distributed for institutional use in Santa Clara, Calif.
